Sony has announced the RX1R III, the third model in its RX1R series of full-frame premium compact cameras. Retaining its fixed-lens design and distinctive styling, the RX1R III introduces several significant upgrades, including a 61-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor, AI-based Real-time Recognition Autofocus and a host of creative features, all in a compact chassis.

At the heart of the RX1R III is a 35mm format full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter. Combined with the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine, this sensor is designed to deliver high resolution, broad dynamic range and low noise performance. The sensor is paired with a ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 lens that maintains the characterful look and feel of its predecessors. However, Sony has fine-tuned the alignment of the lens and sensor to optimise image quality.

Despite its fixed focal length, the RX1R III features a Step Crop Shooting mode, offering three preset focal lengths: 30mm, 50mm and 70mm, with the option to reselect these during raw file editing. The lens also has a macro mode for close-ups down to 20cm.

The RX1R III brings advanced subject recognition thanks to its AI processing unit. The autofocus system uses 693 phase-detection points covering around 78% of the image area and can recognise eyes, faces, heads and bodies, even if they are partially obscured. These capabilities extend to stills and video alike.

On the colour front, the RX1R III has twelve built-in Creative Looks, including two new additions designed for nostalgic or vibrant images. These can be applied to both photos and video.

There's also a 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder, USB-C charging and up to 300 shots per battery charge.
