Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS announced - the first G Master Macro Prime

The Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS - a long black lens with several switches and rings

Sony has introduced the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS, its first macro prime lens in the G Master line-up. This new mid-telephoto macro lens brings enhanced magnification, improved image quality and faster autofocus compared to the existing Sony FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS. Designed for demanding macro photographers, it also features a more robust construction and refined handling. With this launch, Sony’s E-mount lens line-up grows to 81 lenses.

The standout feature of the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS is its 1.4x magnification – going beyond the 1:1 ratio that defines traditional true macro lenses. It’s also compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, which enable up to 2.8x magnification. These allow subjects to fill more of the frame from further away, which is helpful when photographing shy insects or when you need to get more light on your subject.

According to Sony, this lens has been developed for photographers who want more flexibility in the field without sacrificing image quality. It includes optical image stabilisation (OSS II) that works with in-body stabilisation to offer 5-axis correction, including adjustments for front-to-back movements, which can be problematic at high magnifications.

Inside, the lens comprises 17 elements arranged in 13 groups, including two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements. These are designed to reduce chromatic aberrations, ghosting and flare while delivering sharp, high-resolution images. Nano AR Coating II is also used for more consistent reflection control and better performance in backlit situations.

The autofocus system has been upgraded too. The new macro lens uses four XD Linear Motors, offering faster performance than the DDSSM system found in Sony’s older 90mm macro. Sony claims autofocus is up to 1.9x faster than the 90mm F2.8 G, and it can track focus at up to 120fps. The lens supports full-time DMF and has a sliding focus ring to switch between AF and MF, along with a focus range limiter, two customisable focus hold buttons and a manual aperture ring with a click/de-click switch.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 26cm and a 67mm filter thread. Despite its robust build, including dust and moisture sealing, it weighs just 646g and measures 81.4 x 147.9mm.

Although the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS is positioned as a lens for macro and close-up work, Sony notes that it also performs well for still life, jewellery, fine art and even portraits – thanks to the high magnification and smooth bokeh from the 11-blade circular aperture.
