Canon has introduced the EOS C50, a new compact Cinema EOS camera that brings full-frame 7K video and 32MP still photo capability to a small, modular camera body. Designed for professionals working on fast-paced video productions, social content and hybrid shooting environments, the EOS C50 is Canon's smallest Cinema EOS camera to date.

Despite its compact size, the EOS C50 is packed with features that meet the needs of modern productions. It has a new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor, paired with Canon's DIGIC DV 7 processor, enabling internal RAW recording at up to 7K 60p and high frame rate recording up to 4K 120p or 2K 180p. The C50’s sensor also supports 32MP still image capture.

Notably, Canon has introduced open gate recording to its Cinema EOS range for the first time with the EOS C50. This allows the full width and height of the sensor to be used, giving more flexibility for horizontal and vertical formats, making it easier to crop or reframe footage in post-production. The Simultaneous Crop Recording function means that vertical or square versions can be recorded at the same time, which is particularly useful for high-end social media content creation.

The camera also features Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for accurate subject detection and tracking, with control over autofocus speed and tracking responsiveness. It can prioritise which eye to focus on and recognises people, dogs, cats and birds.

The EOS C50 is built to be flexible, with a low-profile design, multiple rigging (connection) points and support for both horizontal and vertical shooting. It includes a detachable handle unit with dual XLR audio terminals and camcorder-style controls. There is native RF lens support, and EF or PL lenses can be used via adapters.

In terms of connectivity, the EOS C50 has HDMI, USB-C, MIC and Timecode terminals, plus dual card slots for CFexpress and SD cards. It supports high-resolution livestreaming and Frame.io Camera to Cloud connectivity, providing a direct link from camera to post-production.

Canon has also announced free firmware updates for existing Cinema EOS models including the EOS C400, C80, R5 C and C70, enhancing features like RAW recording and focus assist.
