Fujifilm X-E5 price, specs, availability confirmed

After a fire-stoking teaser campaign, Fujifilm has finally unveiled the full details of its new X‑E5 mirrorless digital camera. As befits the Fujifilm's X-E series and the company’s approach to upgrades, the X-E5 is a rangefinder‑style camera with a 40.2 megapixel APS-C format back‑illuminated X‑Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and the X‑Processor 5, packed into a 445 g body. It's designed for those seeking a highly portable, yet capable everyday camera with a viewfinder.

For the first time in the X Series, the X‑E5 features a top plate machined from a single piece of aluminium. This, and the flush-fit viewfinder and diopter control, gives the camera a premium look and feel. There's also a new Film Simulation Mode dial with three customisable profiles that allow you to create your own 'recipes' for easy recall. Meanwhile, the Classic Display mode simplifies the view in the electronic viewfinder (EVF) to evoke the look and feel of traditional analogue cameras. After using the camera for a couple of days ahead of its announcement, I can confirm that the result is an immersive shooting experience.

The new Film Simulation Mode dial gives a fast route to seven of the most popular Film Simulations. There are also three customisable settings that can be set to access your favourite Film Simulation Mode with or without a ‘recipe’ that finesses the look of the image.

In a first for the X-E series, the Fujifilm X-E5 has in-body image stabilisation (IBIS). This five‑axis system delivers up to 7 stops of shake correction at the centre of the frame and 6 stops at the periphery.

The Fujifilm X-E5 also features a digital teleconverter with 1.4x and 2.0x zooms, while the rear screen flips through up to 180° for low‑, high‑angle and selfie use. Video shooters will appreciate 6.2K/30 fps capture. There’s also autofocus tracking powered by deep‑learning subject detection (recognising aeroplanes, trains, cars, motorcycles, animals or birds, plus human faces and eyes).

While the X-E4 has a flat front, the X-E5 has a pronounced grip.

The camera features Fujifilm's latest X‑Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, the same chip as is in the popular X-T5, X-T50 and X-H2, to deliver high-resolution images. There's also a base ISO setting of 125 and electronic shutter speeds up to 1/180,000 sec with full-resolution shooting at up to 13 frames per second.
