What is the 3 Legged Thing Axis Anywhere?
The 3 Legged Thing Axis Anywhere is a QD-compatible strap designed to help you carry your camera more comfortably by connecting to your backpack shoulder straps or a single shoulder strap and a waistbelt. Rather than supporting the camera with a traditional neck or shoulder strap, the Axis Anywhere attaches securely to both your backpack and belt, effectively redistributing the weight and keeping the camera stable against your body. It’s ideal for long hikes, location shoots or days when you want quick access to your camera without straining your shoulders or neck.
It’s part of the Axis Strap System — a modular system that includes a range of QD-compatible straps, slings, plates and L-brackets, all built around a secure and flexible Quick Detach (QD) system originally developed for aerospace and military use.
The 3 Legged Thing Axis Anywhere has a clip at either end to connect it to a backpack, and a QD Swivel connector that slides along the strap while holding a camera.

With this backpack, I attached one end of the Axis Anywhere to a loop near the top of one of the shoulder straps, and the other end to the webbing at the bottom end of the other shoulder strap. Both ends could be attached to the shoulder strap loops, but this would mean the camera would hang in front of my body, which I’m not keen on.
Key Features
The Axis Anywhere consists of a short, robust strap with clips at end and a QD Swivel connector that can slide along most of its length. The clips can connect to a convenient loop or attachment on your backpack shoulder strap and either the waist belt or the other shoulder strap. Snap-on clips allow you to quickly remove the main section of the Axe Anywhere while leaving the mounts in place ready for when you want to use the strap.
This two-point connection allows your camera to hang securely across your front, with the weight supported by your backpack or your backpack and belt rather than your shoulders or neck. It’s a simple idea, but it makes a big difference to comfort and balance — especially when carrying heavier gear for long periods.
The QD Swivel is the same trusted connection system used across the Axis range, offering quick connection and disconnection while remaining secure under load.
The length of the Axis Anywhere can be adjusted quickly by pulling it through the buckle near the top of the strap.
Build and Handling
As with the rest of the Axis components, the Axis Anywhere feels durable and well-constructed. The materials are strong yet lightweight, and the stitching is reinforced in key areas for durability. Once fitted, it holds its position well, even with a full-frame camera and a telephoto lens attached.
I tested the Axis Anywhere with a range of cameras and lenses using a QD plate mount connected via the camera's tripod bush. I found the clips that connect the strap to the backpack quite tough to open, by they stay closed, which is more important.
When walking around, the camera felt secure and easy to access, while the backpack's harness distributed the load.
Setting it up takes a few moments because you need to workout where to mount the strap - it won't work with all backpacks. You need to get the attachment points right for your frame and gear.
The clips that attach the Axis Anywhere to a a backpack are tough and secure. Once they are in place, you can remove the main section of the strap quickly by undoing the snap-fasteners at either end.
The QD Plates attach to a camera like a tripod quick release plate to allow the QD Swivel to be connected.
Performance
In practical use, the Axis Anywhere does a great job of shifting the load off your shoulders. It keeps your camera positioned close to your body although I often keep my hand on the camera for reassurance.
The QD Swivel system continues to impress — it attaches quickly and detaches just as fast when needed, making it easy to use the camera handheld or on a tripod. Like all QD-compatible axis straps from 3 Legged Thing, the system comes with an Arca-Swiss plate and is compatible with the company’s QD-enabled L-brackets, such as the Arnie.
The 3 Legged Thing Axis Anywhere is an uncomplicated way of carrying a camera while wearing a backpack.
Verdict
The 3 Legged Thing Axis Anywhere may look simple, but it opens up a lot of possibilities for more comfortable way to carry a camera. It’s ideal for photographers who already use a backpack or belt system and want to shift the load away from their shoulders or neck without compromising speed or access. Whether you’re shooting landscapes, events or just spending long days on your feet, the Axis Anywhere makes carrying your camera less of a strain.
It’s small, strong, and thoughtfully designed — a clever and practical example of how small accessories can make a big difference in the field.
