Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z 24‑70 mm f/2.8 S II, with sales starting September 2025 and an official UK recommended retail price of £ 2,599.00 (ROI: € 2,999.00) and $2,799 in the USA.

According to Nikon, the new Nikkor Z 24‑70 mm f/2.8 S II as a more capable successor to its already well‑regarded Nikkor Z 24‑70 mm f/2.8 S. The lens has been completely redesigned to be lighter, better balanced and more capable for both stills and video shooters than the original lens.

The standout feature of the new lens is its internal zoom mechanism, a first for a professional-level 24‑70 mm full‑frame zoom. Thanks to this, the lens barrel neither extends nor retracts during zooming, which maintains its centre of gravity. This means photographers may find it easier to hold steady during handheld use, and video shooters shouldn't need to rebalance the lens on a gimbal when zooming between focal lengths. The internal zoom also implies fewer moving parts are exposed. Nikon has given the lens with pro‑grade weather‑sealing to protect it in demanding outdoor conditions.

Speedier, smoother autofocus

The lens is claimed to deliver five times faster autofocus, thanks to Nikon’s new Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor (SSVCM). This is also said to be up to 50% quieter, with 60% faster focus tracking. These upgrades suggest significant advantages for both stills and video performance.

Nikon’s next‑generation S‑line optical construction uses fewer but more effective elements, including dual‑sided aspherical elements and ED glass. It’s claimed to improve image rendering while reducing weight. A rounded 11‑blade aperture is said to produce smoother, more circular bokeh.

Nikon also says the use of Meso‑Amorphous and ARNEO coatings helps counter ghosting and flare, even in harsh lighting.

Improved close‑up and handling features

Compared to the original Nikkor Z 24‑70 mm f/2.8 S , the minimum focus distances are improved to about 24 cm at the 24 mm end and 33 cm at the 70 mm point, with a maximum magnification of 0.21x at 24 mm and 0.32x at 70 mm.

Other practical enhancements include a de‑clickable control ring (click on for tactile feedback, click off for silent, stepless control) and a focus‑limiter switch (restricting focus range to from 0.33 m to infinity), useful for maintaining consistent working distance while zooming.

Nikon will sell the lens with the new HB‑117 round lens hood, complete with a filter adjustment window. This means users can adjust rotating filters (including variable ND and polarisers filters) without having to remove the hood, a handy feature for videographers working in changing lighting.
