Fujifilm announces the X half: a compact digital camera inspired by half-frame film photography
Fujifilm has announced the X half, a uniquely compact digital camera designed to celebrate the spirit of storytelling and analogue charm. Weighing just 240g and measuring barely more than a deck of cards, the X half embraces creativity with a blend of nostalgic design and modern technology.

Inspired by half-frame film cameras, the X half has been designed with vertical shooting in mind, making it ideal for capturing content in the format that many of us share today. The 3:4 aspect ratio rear screen and vertically-oriented sensor are central to its existence. Whether you’re shooting stills or video, it encourages a different way of seeing and sharing.
One of the most interesting features of the X half is its 2-in-1 mode. This allows two images to be combined into one file in-camera, using the ‘winding lever’ on the top plate. This can also be done later using the dedicated X half app, which launches soon. You can even pair a clip of video with an image.

The X half also introduces ‘Film Camera Mode’, a digital take on the experience of shooting film. You choose your roll length (36, 54 or 72 images) and the Film Simulation Mode, shoot your images without reviewing them, then ‘develop’ them in the app. It’s designed to give a sense of delayed gratification that some photographers miss in the digital age.
Film lovers will appreciate the 13 built-in Film Simulations, including Reala Ace, Astia and Classic Chrome, as well as new filters like Light Leak, Halation and Expired Film. These can be further enhanced with features such as Grain Effect, vignette, and a date stamp.
Nearly all operations are handled via a touchscreen interface, with swipes in different directions used to adjust settings. A small secondary LCD allows quick access to film simulations while the aperture value can be set via a lens ring.
There’s no raw shooting or continuous burst mode, the X half focuses on fun, not fuss.
The camera connects to mobile devices via Bluetooth and integrates directly with Instax Mini Link, Square Link and Link Wide printers. It will be supported by the new X half app for digital development, sharing, and printing.
